Nuclear Power Plants: After a Shutdown

Even if a nuclear reactor is switched off, it can take decades before the threat of harmful radiation recedes. Shutting down a reactor requires costly specialized technology. After German reunification, the former East German nuclear power plant in the town of Greifswald was taken off the grid. Since then, specialists have been carefully dismantling the complex.
