Oblak stars in feisty draw in Madrid

In the opening two minutes, Gareth Bale broke clean through on goal but Jan Oblak made a strong save to deny the Welshman. In a first half that the visitors edged, it was the Atletico goalkeeper that kept the score goalless.

The Slovenian denied both Cristiano Ronaldo and Bale from range, before making an even better stop to keep out an audacious effort from James Rodriguez. Real's frustration grew and despite having more of the ball and making fewer mistakes, they couldn't take advantage.

The home side rarely threatened - Casillas saved from Antoine Griezmann after Sergio Ramos misplaced a pass at the back - and found themselves level at the break thanks only to their keeper. Oblak denied James after a superb burst of pace from defender Raphael Varane set up a chance on the break.

Juanfran headed a good chance wide in the opening five minutes of the second half, but Atletico's control did not last long. Soon the game was end-to-end again, with the aggression up a notch. Mario Mandzukic took an elbow to the face from Ramos, who evaded a booking, but that did not stop the bloodied Croatian from playing on.

The stop-start nature of the game left real chances at a premium. Atletico launched a late bid to snatch a win, but Real Madrid stood firm thanks to some excellent defending from Varane and co. This result means Real Madrid have now failed to beat Atletico at the last seven attempts and leaves the tie nicely poised for the second leg in the Bernabeu next week.

Juventus 1-0 Monaco

After outclassing Borussia Dortmund, Juventus was favorited to progress against French surprise package Monaco. Carlos Tevez tested Danijel Subasic early on, but the Croatian goalkeeper was equal to it. Gianluigi Buffon was on hand at the other end moments later, denying Yannick Ferreira Carrasco with a smart save in the box. Tevez failed to connect at the back post as Juventus pushed for an opener.

Evra fired over the bar before Tevez looked to turn provider, or so it seemed, but Arturo Vidal could only blaze over. Juventus ended the first half frustrated, but it wasn't long before fortune replaced their frustration.

After Buffon made another great stop to deny substitute Bernardo Silva, Ricardo Carvalho fouled Alvaro Morata near the edge of the box only to see a penalty given. Vidal converted powerfully to finally convert one of the home side's chances. Dimitar Berbatov header over in the final 20 minutes, but Juventus worked hard to hold onto a slender lead that they will take to France for the second leg next week.
