Those planning on getting smashed at Munich's Oktoberfest, should be willing to pay for any medical costs they incur, according to German politicians. Those who can afford to get drunk at Oktoberfest should be able to pay for the cost of getting sober, said Julika Sandt, a Munich candidate for the pro-business FDP party. "If someone who is drunk brings themselves or others in danger, then health insurance companies should not have to pay the bill," said Karl Lauterbach, from the Social Democratic Party, in an interview with the Bild am Sonntag newspaper. Oktoberfest kicked off last weekend in Munich and will go through Oct. 3. Emergency doctors need to sober up or treat around 500 people every year.
