One person was killed and up to 50 injured Tuesday when a German regional train crashed into a tar-laying machine on the rails near the southern German town of Dietmannsried in the state of Bavaria, police said. The locomotive's engineer died on the spot after the collision with the construction vehicle, which led the three-car train to derail. The driver of the tar-laying machine was trying to cross the tracks when he saw the train coming but was unable to move the vehicle in time. He jumped from the cab to save his own life. Between 40 and 50 of the passengers on board, including several school children, suffered minor scrapes and bruises and were being treated for shock. The rail line was closed for the day.
