Our beautiful planet
March 9, 2017We asked you to send in images of our beautiful world to ward off the chill of the European winter - and this stunning photograph of Jinapsan Beach on the Pacific island of Guam definitely fits the bill!
William Marhoffer from Honolulu, Hawaii, lived on Guam, which is US territory, for three years. He took this picture on a recent work trip to the island for meetings on preventing marine pollution in the area. When business was over, Marhoffer stayed an extra weekend to enjoy the island's beauty. "People consider Hawai'i a tropical paradise only because they have yet to experience Guam!" he says.
Guam is the largest and most populous island in Micronesia, an area of Oceania made up of thousands of small islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Some of its native plants and animals have come under threat due to the introduction of foreign species. But with tourists, in particular scuba divers, keen to experience its natural wonders, the island has made efforts to protect the environment, including its stunning coral reef habitats.
