He was just 17 years old when he signed up with the ensemble's double bass section. Born in 1985 in the Venezuelan capital Caracas, he discovered his talent through the music education program "El Sistema". It was founded by José Antonio Abreu over 30 years ago, with the goal of rescuing children from the street and offering them new hope and meaning through music. When he first heard the sound of the double bass at the age of 10, he knew - that was what he wanted to play. Since then, his rise to success has been meteoric. By the age of 14, he was a professional musician with the Simon Bolivar youth orchestra. At 15 he won his first major international award and two years later he was invited to Berlin. Today Edicson Ruiz spends six months of the year touring the world with the orchestra. The rest of the time he and his wife live in Berlin.
