The dramatic rise in the price of crude oil is considered a serious threat to the global economy and has seen energy become a central issue at the upcoming G8 summit in Japan. The International Energy Agency believes in effective usage of fossil fuels, while the independent Energy Watch Group has called for broad commitments to renewable energy sources. The Club of Rome, meanwhile, is working on a visionary project: solar power for Europe from the deserts of North Africa.
