Planet Berlin: Gentle skin care from natural products
Syrian John Al Haddad sells traditional soaps from Aleppo, most derived from olive and laurel oil, in his Schöneberg store.
The soap collector
When John Al Haddad relocated to Berlin in the 1990s, he was lacking decent soap. So after visits to Syria, he brought his favorite laurel soaps to Germany, but only for personal use. Then he had a business idea.
Ancient origins
Aleppo soaps are pure natural products — and have been since the 8th century. John Al Haddad has searched out original manufacturers in his homeland and works closely with them. The natural products are only boiled in the winter months, since it is too hot otherwise. The best soap pieces are then cured for up to seven years.
More than soap
Lorbeerseife Berlin was initially just about soaps. However, they sold better with matching decorations, including kilims and damask blankets. The handmade carpets are also from Syria and have long been part of the assortment in the Schöneberg store.
25 varieties
Anise, pomegranate or myrtle: over the years, many new varieties have been added to John Al Haddad's soap range. Most are his own creations inspired by old medical books and knowledge about Middle Eastern medicinal herbs. His natural soaps are ideal for every skin type.
