August 26, 2010

A wooden cross in front of the presidential palace in Warsaw has led to a political debate about the influence of the Church on the State.

Polish Boy Scouts erected the cross in memory of former President Lech Kaczynski, who died in April in a plane crash. The newly elected President, Bronislav Komorovski, wanted the cross removed, citing the separation of Church and State. But militant Catholics prevented that by holding watch over the cross. The quarrel has been fueled by Jaroslav Kaczynski, who ran for president after his twin brother died.
