Many people in southern Europe are suffering under the austerity which Angela Merkel has promoted as the response to the crisis. If Greeks and Spaniards could vote in Germany's election, the Chancellor would stand little chance of staying in office. Yet many observers from around Europe see in Merkel the only politician who can hold the continent together during the crisis.
While commentators in Germany are talking about the most uninspiring election campaign in the country's history, the rest of Europe's media are reporting on the vote more intensively than they have for many years.

Ulrike Winkelmann – After completing her studies in German, constitutional law and political science in Hamburg and London, she underwent journalistic training at the “taz” newspaper in Hamburg. She has now worked there at various desks since 1999. After a short stint as head of the politics desk at the weekly newspaper “Der Freitag”, she returned to the “taz” in 2011, where she is now one of the chief editors for domestic politics.
Laura Lucchini – After studying communication sciences at university in Milan and Madrid, she completed a master’s degree in journalism in Buenos Aires. Today, she is a freelance journalist for the Argentinean newspaper “La Nación”, the “El País” in Spain, and the Italian publications “Linkiesta” and “L´Unità.”
Alan Posener was born in London and grew up in Kuala Lumpur and West - Berlin. A teacher by training, he quit school to become a freelance author and journalist. He worked as an editor and author for the German newspaper “Die Welt” and was chief of commentary for "Welt am Sonntag". At the present, he contributes to a variety of media, among them the debate magazine The European. Posener is the author of several critically acclaimed books, among them biographies of the American idols John F. Kennedy, Franklin D. Roosevelt and Elvis Presley.
