Reichstag Building in Berlin

Elisabeth Yorck von WartenburgJuly 22, 2015

It is one of the most visited sights in Berlin, and since 1999 once again home to the German Parliament. Some of Germany's important historical and political turning points are closely associated with this building.

The Reichstag building was constructed at the end of the 19th century, when Berlin was declared the capital of the German empire. The newly elected parliament needed a place to gather. Over the years the Reichstag building was repeatedly modified. The new glass dome, made with 800 tons of steel and 3,000 square meters of glass, was opened in April 1999. Inside the dome a spiral walkway leads visitors up the dome and treats them to a panoramic view of Berlin's rooftops. Since the German government moved to Berlin in 1999, over 15 million people have visited the Reichstag building.
