Orange Order Parades in Northern Ireland

Twenty years after the Good Friday Agreement peace in Northern Ireland remains tenuous, and violent clashes between Protestants and Catholics continue to occur. Mairéad O’Donnell wants to secure peace for the people of Belfast.

Every year around July 12, members of the conservative Protestant Orange Order march to commemorate the victory of the forces of Protestant King William of Orange over those of deposed King James II of England in 1690. The Orangemen wear orange sashes and black bowler hats. Catholics see the marches as provocative and violent outbreaks are not infrequent. Belfast Sinn Féin councillor Mairéad O'Donnell hopes to broker peace. A Report by Louise Osborne and Jennifer Collins.
