Schalke paid around 25 million euros to secure Embolo’s services, according to media reports, which would make him the club’s most expensive signing in their history.

Schalke said they and Basel had agreed not to disclose financial details of the deal.

Embolo is the second addition to Schalke's squad for next season after they signed Brazilian centre back Naldo from Wolfsburg in May.

The Gelsenkirchen-based team finished a disappoitning fifth in the Bundesliga last term and qualified for the Europa League, Europe's second-tier club competition which they won in 1997.

Cameroon-born Embolo represented Switzerland at Euro 2016, playing in all four of their matches, but was unable to prevent his team losing to Poland on penalties in Saturday’s last-16 clash.

He came off the bench in the 58thminute in Saint-Etienne and fluffed his one clear scoring chance when he failed to connect cleanly with a back-post volley.

A product of Basel’s youth academy, Embolo made his professional debut in March 2014.

Schalke also said they had agreed with 33-year-old defender Sascha Riether to extend his contract by another year to the end of June 2017.
