German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder met with African aid activists and musicians Bob Geldof and Bono in Gleneagles, Scotland on Wednesday, shortly before the Group of Eight summit there. The three discussed debt relief for the poorest countries and expanding governmental development aid. Schröder had met U2 frontman Bono several times previously, but it was his first encounter with Geldof, who organized the Live 8 series of pop concerts, one of which took place in Berlin on Saturday.
