Former Finance Minister Peer Steinbrück will square off against incumbent Chancellor Angela Merkel next year as the SPD's candidate in the upcoming general election. Current polls suggest that he has little to no chance. And the SPD and their favored coalition partners, the Greens, also trail the conservatives and the Free Democratic Party in opinion surveys.
