Late on Saturday, police told local media that the suspect had been randomly shooting people.

"What it looks like is that we have somebody just driving around, finding people and shooting them dead in their tracks," Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said.

Hours later, police said they had a "strong suspect" in custody who was found with weapons in his car. The man did not resist arrest when approached by police.

Media reports, citing police, said the suspect was a man aged 45 who came from Kalamazoo. Earlier, police had said they were looking for a white male in his 50s.

Four people were shot and killed at a Cracker Barrel restaurant parking lot, while a father and son were killed at a car dealership.

A 14-year-old girl shot in the Cracker Barrel parking lot is in critical condition.

The shootings were related to an earlier drive-by attack that left one woman wounded at an apartment complex.
