Germany's womens football team has finished second at the SheBelieves Cup in the United States thanks to a hard-fought 1-0 win over England at RFK Stadium in Washington.

Wolfsburg striker Anja Mittag scored just before halftime for the reigning Olympic champions - her 50th goal for the national team overall - as the Germans finished as tournament runners-up behind France.

After a difficult start in which Germany struggled to contain a high-pressing England side - who had secured a dramatic 1-0 victory over the hosts and world champions on Saturday - Steffi Jones' team gradually played their way into the game.

Lina Magulls hit the bar from distance and Alexandra Popps headed just wide before Mittag finally gave Germany the lead, calmly finishing off a flowing move down the left hand side.

Ending on a high

"This was precisely the positive ending that we had hoped for," said coach Jones. "I'm extremely satisfied with the team's performance - congratulations to the whole squad."

Germany's first home game of the year is against Olympic bronze medalists Canada in Erfurt on April 9 as the side prepare for the European Championships in the Netherlands in July. In the group stage, the Germans will face Sweden, Italy and Russia.

Earlier in the tournament, England striker Ellen White attracted attention in Germany after celebrating her late winning goal against the United States with a tribute to FC Cologne striker Anthony Modeste.
