Shooting at US Sikh temple

A shooting at a Sikh temple in the US Midwest has left at least seven people dead. Local authorities have not been able to confirm the number of injuries or the motive behind the shooting.

Six people died after being shot on Sunday morning at a Sikh temple outside Milwaukee. Local police killed one gunman outside of the building.The motive behind the shooting remains unclear.

The local news media in the city of Milwaukee - located about 90 miles (150km) north of Chicago - relayed varying degrees of detail as reports emerged, painting a picture of congregants trapped inside the temple while police surrounded the building.

Reports did not indicate how many shooters were involved, nor did they provide a clear timeline of the incident.

According to the city's newspaper, about 3,000 Sikh families live in the Milwaukee region.

Sikhism is monotheistic religion from South East Asia. The US has a relatively small Sikh population, numbering between 500,000 and 1,000,000, according to the non-profit organization United Sikhs.
