Conference continues after Singapore shooting

Singapore police have increased patrols around a security conference after shooting a motorist dead. Officers opened fire after a car suddenly accelerated despite warnings to stop, crashing through police barricades.

Singapore police shot and killed one person and detained two others early Sunday after a car crashed through police barricades near the hotel accommodating German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen, her US counterpart, Ashton Carter (pictured), and a host of other top names in international security.

Police said the incident happened in the vicinity of the Shangri-La Hotel during a three-day meeting of top defense officials. It did not appear that the incident had endangered any delegates.

"Substances believed to be drugs were found on one of the persons detained," the police announced in a statement on Sunday. "Due to the ongoing Shangri-La Dialogue, security measures including vehicle and person checkpoints have been put in place in the vicinity of the Shangri-La Hotel," police added.

The conference resumed at 9 a.m. local time (0100 UTC) with no signs of alarm in the main lobby. Carter and his delegation left later in the morning for Vietnam.
