Sound, Reception, Value! Listeners’ Reactions to DRM

November 23, 2007

Digital shortwave broadcasts sound better, are easier to receive and make it possible to send text and photos along with the normal sound program.

We have collected some of our listeners’ reactions to this new offer:

“The reception on 3995kHz is still excellent here in the middle of the UK. I enjoy the classical music program and the jazz program that follows. Thanks so much for putting forth the effort. Thanks also for the evening program that I can receive without interruption. The reception for this type of music is normally very broken up – but DRM sounds as good as every local FM broadcast. I really hope that you can carry on with this program.” (R. Glyn.Jones, UK)

“Right now I receive and listen to your digital program in stereo (Radio Journal with Catrin Brackmann) using the Sines (Portugal) transmitter on 17710kHz (20.96 kbps). The reception is fantastic – even though there is a shortage every now and then. The receiver is the do-it-yourself-device from Elektor with a long-wire antenna.” (Gottfried Sennenkamp, Germany)

“I live in Vienna in the ground floor of six-floor, concrete house in a real Faraday cage. Like I (…) expected, I had a negative result the first couple times I tried to receive programming with the Digital World Traveller (Coding Technologies) and the wire FM aerial provided. Absolute dead-air.”

“So I put a 5 by 2.5 m wire loop on the front wall of my computer room and wouldn’t you know it – I can now receive DW on 3995 kHz with SNR between 15 and 17 db in uninterrupted stereo. Those who don’t know think it’s FM!” (Dr. J. Braunbeck, Austria)

"Today at 12:30 UTC I could receive your broadcast from Jülich and I ‘discovered’ a data-broadcast as well: Journaline with news in English and German. Fantastic! I live near Venice and use a Kenwood R2000 modified with a DRM-Mixer and a 30-meter wire antenna.” (Andrea Russo, Italy)

Note: Journaline is currently being broadcast as a test.

“I receive (the DW program) Trincomolee (from Sri Lanka) on 21675 kHz between 8:00 am and 10:00 am daily using a Coding Technologies Digital Traveller. The quality is exceptional!” (Mark Williams, South Africa)

"I just wanted to tell you that the reception in southern Sweden is excellent. I have tested different frequencies in the last little while and most of them work very well." (Jens Koefoed, Sweden)
