Gold Rush in South Africa

Day after day, illegal gold prospectors search for a few grains of the precious metal in the disused shafts of the mining companies outside Johannesburg. Even though there’s little gold left here, hundreds of poor people risk their health here each day.

They often spend the entire night crawling through the narrow shafts. Hlophani and her friend are among the few women who venture into the abandoned mines to try to collect enough gold to feed their families.
