An accident at an air show in northern Bavaria has left one spectator dead and twenty others injured, five of whom are in critical condition.

According to Nuremberg police, the accident occurred after the biplane failed to leave the ground during takeoff, instead veering off to the right of the runway and into a group of air show spectators.

"It appears that the plane nosedived after having had difficulties taking off," an officer at the scene of the accident said.

According to the organizers of the event, the biplane - with two wings, one above the other - was one of the main attractions of the air show.

It remains unclear what caused the failed takeoff.
