The annual Thai Songkran festival to celebrate the arrival of the Buddhist new year was once a calm affair focused on paying respect to elders and carrying out various religious rites. These days, however, the celebrations tend to be characterized by raucous revelry, with water fights, painted elephants, fireworks and raves. The festival runs this year from April 13 to 15.
