June 22, 2015

Rock and pop stars live fast and die young. Cliché or reality? This documentary attempts to answer the question as it journeys back through the history of music.

The term “Club 27” has emerged in pop culture. All you need to gain automatic membership is to be a star and die at age 27. Among the members are Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Brian Jones, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse. This lineup seems to feed a cliché that has been associated with many legends in the industry: musicians live fast, play hard and die young.

Jimi Hendrix died at age 27, pumped full of sleeping tablets and alcohol.

This documentary delves into the origins of popular music, in San Francisco’s hippie quarter Haight-Ashbury, New York, Middle England and of course Compton in LA, the Mecca of Gangsta Rap. It’s only in these places that you really get a true sense of the mythical, excessive and fascinating symbiosis between music and death. Artists from a range of decades describe their relationship with dying and death, be it a metaphysical experience, denial, melancholy or violence.

Janis Joplin also died at 27 after an overdose of heroine and alcohol.
