The Price of Life - Part 1 & 2

April 4, 2016

Can a person’s life be measured in monetary terms? The instinctive reaction to such a question might be ‘no.’ But in reality people have long been treated as a commodity.

01.04.2016 DW FEATURE Mathematische Formel zur Berechnung des Wertes
Prof. Christian Scholz developed the so-called Human Capital Measurement formula.

What is a person worth in concrete terms? Experts the world over, including health economists, actuaries, doctors and politicians are attempting to answer that very question. Car crashes, natural disasters, hostage situations, road accidents, wars, environmental policies and surrogacy all raise issues which require the cost of human life to be determined.

01.04.2016 DW FEATURE Mensch als Kunstwerk auf Zeit
A German art collector paid 150,000 € for the rights to Tim Steiner’s back. Now the owner has the right to exhibit Steiner twice a year.
01.04.2016 DW FEATURE Was bin ich wert - Peter Scharf
Filmmaker Peter Scharf wanted to know what he was worth in monetary terms and if that value could really be determined.

‘The Price of my Life’ opens with the provocative question: ‘what am I worth?’ Documentary filmmaker Peter Scharf’s quest to answer it takes him around the world. The film poses such questions as: how does a compensation specialist determine how much the lives of the people who died in the terror attacks on September 11 are worth? Why is the life of a fireman who was killed worth millions of dollars less than that of a stockbroker?

Or is it worth operating on an old person who needs a hip replacement? The two part documentary takes us into an unknown world where a person’s life is assessed on a daily basis. The results of this investigation range from horrifying and cruel to enlightening, absurd and sometimes even amusing.
