The Roof of Europe - The Magic of the Alps

January 8, 2014

The relationship between man and Alps has always yielded stories full of superlatives, equally rich in triumph and tragedy. The mountain range straddles eight countries and is home to almost fifteen million people.

The Alps also serve as a home to a broad variety of flora and fauna. The impact of mass tourism and traffic are having a damaging effect on this delicate and rich eco-system. “Europe’s adventure park,” as the mountains are often known, attracts some 100 million tourists from all over the world every year.

Our two-part documentary follows the “Via Alpina,” a spectacular 6000-kilometer hiking trail spanning the entire length of the Alps from the West to the East. The trail starts the tallest peak of the Slovenian Alps, 2800-meter-high Mount Triglav and passes the Vrbsko Jezero Lake, the Hintertux Glacier and the Mont Blanc into the Savoy region of France. The second part of the documentary starts with the legendary opening of the ski season in Ischgl, Austria. We then continue to the Piemont region of Italy and the German town of Berchtesgaden. Along the way we encounter extraordinary people, magnificent landscapes, permanent ice and luxurious ski resorts, ending up atop the so-called “roof of Europe,” the Jungfraujoch peak in Switzerland.

The formation of the Alps began some 100 million years ago.
