Dumoulin tops Froome for time trial title

Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana champion Chris Froome came up short in the time-trial at the UCI World Championship. Tom Dumoulin won the gold as four-time champion Tony Martin finished ninth.

Tom Dumoulin caught Chris Froome during Wednesday's 31-kilometer (20-mile) time trial at the world cycling championship in Norway, despite this year's Tour de France winner having a 90-second head start.

Tony Martin, a four-time time trial winner and the defending champion, finished ninth.

"I can't believe it, wow! It's really amazing, it's such a good day," said Dumoulin.

"I thought my power meter was off because it was so high. I felt really, really good."

Dumoulin, 26, started the route, which included a grueling stretch up Mount Floyen, in the rain, but that did not slow him down as he finished in 44 minutes and 41 seconds. It was his second major triumph of the cycling season after winning the 2017 Giro d'Italia in May.

Froome, normally strong in the time trial format, finished third behind Slovenian cyclist Primoz Roglic. He decided to race in the championship despite riding in the three-week Vuelta a Espana, which finished on September 10.

"I gave it everything I had and I'd much rather be here and get a bronze than be at home wondering, 'What if?'" he said. "The question has been answered and now it's time to put my feet up."
