French Open first round

The top seeds involved in the French Open first round all headed through to the second stage of the tournament after wins on Sunday. German top seed Philipp Kohlschreiber won comfortably, while Roger Federer got angry.

Those looking for upsets on the sands of Roland Garros were disappointed as the French Open kicked off on Sunday. Roger Federer, Stanislas Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori and German Philipp Kohlschreiber all comfortably booked their places in the second round.

Federer overcame Colombian Alejandro Falla to win in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-4. The only thing that disconcerted the Swiss number-two seed was an intruding fan. Federer slammed tournament organisers after the incident, stating that more needs to be done to protect players.

Security had been tightened at the tournament ahead of this year's event, following January's deadly Islamist attack on Paris-based satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Fifth seed Kei Nishikori of Japan and eighth seed Stanislas Wawrinka also won comfortably, beating Paul-Henri Mathieu and Marsel Ilhan respectively in straight sets.

The top German player Philipp Kohlschreiber had no trouble in his match, defeating Go Soeda of Japan in straight sets 6-1, 6-0, 6-2. Other German players Florian Mayer and Matthias Bachinger both lost in straight sets.

One the women's wide, third seed Simona Halep overcame Russia's Evgeniya Rodina in straight sets 7-5, 6-4.
