TT One year of Dmitry Medvedev as russian president

Michael BärMay 6, 2009

Welcome Back. It's one year since Dmitry MedVedev succeeded Vladimir Putin as Russian president. The former head of the energy giant Gazprom.. was relatively unknown politically.. when he took office in a manouevre that saw Putin take the job of prime minister. That prompted concerns that he would be little more than a puppet with Putin pulling the strings.... and that he would make way for his mentor to assume the presidency again after a single term. But in recent months Medvedev has shown a more liberal face and criticized Putin's government. Observors are still uncertain whether this marks a genuine political change in Russia.
