Two dead in Pittsburg shooting

Two people including a gunman were killed in the eastern US city of Pittsburgh after the man opened fire at a university psychiatric clinic, the medical center said. Seven others were reported injured.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that a policeman on duty at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) had shot the gunman, adding that the officer had also been wounded by gunfire.

Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl stopped short of saying the shooter had been killed by the policeman, but added that "police acted admirably and did engage in gunfire." Seven people were wounded in the shooting at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, UPMC said in a Twitter posting.

Gregory Brant told news agency Associated Press that he was in a waiting room on the first floor when pandemonium broke out. "We heard a bunch of yelling, some shooting, people yelling, 'Hide! Hide!" he said. "Everyone's yelling, 'Stay down!'"

A medical center spokeswoman said shooting victims had been taken to the nearby UPMC Presbyterian Emergency Room.

Joe Avia, a security guard at Presbyterian, said the scene at the hospital following the shooting was chaotic. "I was not prepared for this at all," Avia said.
