Two killed in shooting at UCLA

Two men have died of gunshot wounds in a suspected murder-suicide at the University of California, Los Angeles. The campus in a bustling part of Los Angeles was in lockdown before being reopened by police.

"A homicide and a suicide occurred," Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck told reporters near the scene. Beck declared the campus safe about two hours after authorities received a 911 call at shortly before 10 a.m. local time (1700 GMT).

"It appears to be entirely contained," he said. "There are no suspects outstanding and no continuing threat to UCLA's campus."

The shooting reportedly took place in a small office in an engineering building called Boelter Hall. A gun was found along with what might be a suicide note, Beck said.

No names have yet been released.

The shooting occurred the week before final exams at UCLA, a major campus of the University of California system with about 43,000 students.

It is not yet known if the victims were students or staff at the school.

Dozens of police, federal agents and tactical response teams reportedly rushed to the campus and ordered all students and staff to shelter in place. A nearby elementary school was also placed on lockdown.

The shooting took place in a building that is part of UCLA's Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. UCLA has about 43,000 students.

UCLA has about 43,000 student and is located in the Westwood section of Los Angeles and one of the more well-regarded schools in the University of California system.
