UK police make three counterterror arrests

Police have detained three women on suspicion of preparing or instigating terrorism acts. One of the arrested women had been shot by police last week during an intelligence-led raid.

London Metropolitan Police announced on Monday that they had arrested an additional three suspects as part of an "ongoing intelligence-led operation" that had already resulted in the detention of six other individuals in London and Kent.

According to Scotland Yard's statement, officers from the Counter Terrorism Command carried out warrants for three addresses in East London. The three women, ages 18, 19 and 21, are being held at a police station outside of London under the Terrorism Act.

The 21-year-old suspect had been shot and seriously injured by police during last Thursday's raid on a house in Willesden, an area of northwest London. The woman was discharged from the hospital on Sunday prior to her arrest. 

None of the suspects have yet been identified or charged.

The past week has seen an uptick in police detentions related to counter-terrorism operations in and around the British capital.

As part of a separate intelligence-led counter-terrorism operation last Thursday, Metropolitan police also arrested Khalid Mohammed Omar Ali near Parliament Square. The 27-year-old had been carrying various knives when he was taken into custody in Whitehall.

The political center of Great Britain remains on edge after the March 22 terror attack, in which attacker Khalid Masood mowed down pedestrians on Westminster Bridge before stabbing a police officer inside the gates of Parliament. Masood was shot dead on-site.
