Artisanal mining accounts for more than half of the commodities extracted from the difficult to reach mines in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. But armed rebel groups control many of them. The United Nations has been sending inspectors to the mines for over three years. The mines not under the control of militants are certified as conflict-free.
