Up close with video journalism

Video journalists can tell stories directly, in the style they want to tell them. They've got the story in their heads as they shoot, bringing it to life through moving images and sound. These days, you don't need years of training in sophisticated film techniques for this, but you do need good habits of observation and be able to react quickly to situations and events. If done well, video can tell stories that really move people.

You need practice if you want to get a feel for effective TV reporting, and that’s what you'll be doing at this workshop: practicing shooting video, editing and mixing until you've got the hang of it, and until it's your own creativity that determines the outcome, not the technology.

When it comes to editing, the focus here is not on mastering the editing software but on knowing how to quickly put a story together in a compelling way.

The goal of the workshop is to enable you to produce good quality video packages, starting from the idea to the final product. We'll show you both the possibilities that video journalism opens up as well as its limits.
