In 2010, the Cuban journalist and human rights activist, Alida Viso Bello, and her husband were forced to move into Spanish exile. Since joining the movement for a free and democratic Cuba in 1993, she had been constantly involved in campaigning for human and civil rights. As a journalist she worked amongst others for the project Cubanet, an independent Internet platform founded in 1994 to publish dissident essays. At the Sociedad de Periodistas Manuel Marquéz Sterling, which was founded in 2001, as well as at the news magazine “De Cuba”, Viso Bello held coordinating positions. In 2003, during a wave of imprisonments in the context of the so-called Primavera Negra (Black Spring), her husband, Ricardo González Alfonso, was imprisoned. Together with other activists, Viso Bello founded the prisoner relief organization, Ladies in White, a connection that repeatedly got her into difficulties with the Cuban intelligence service.
