Volkswagen Workers Go On Strike

Workers at German automaker Volkswagen's plant in Mexico went on strike Wednesday. The trade union there is demanding a pay raise of 4.45 percent and an additional food allowance of €72 ($89) a year. The plant in Puebla, around 120 kilometers (75 miles) southeast of Mexico City, is where the VW Bug models sold around the world are produced. In addition, the VW Jetta models sold in the United States are manufactured there. Thomas Karig, a spokesman for VW, said the strike was "completely unexpected." More than 13,000 workers are employed at the plant. The last time they went out on strike was in 2001.
