Welcome to eco@africa

December 15, 2016

This week, we find out how tree stumps can slow desertification, go in search of WWII bombs off the coast of Germany, visit orphaned chimps in Zambia and ask how eco-friendly Christmas trees can be.

On this week's show, join our hosts Nneota Egbe and Edith Kimani for another voyage through the world of environmental innovation.

In Tanzania, an agricultural scientist battles desertification by reviving the stumps of trees felled to create agricultural land, while a Nigerian artist and architect goes back to the roots of African house design to create a low-energy home.

In Kenya, a paper bag maker has taken on the challenge of trying to encourage people to move away from plastic, while simultaneously creating youth employment.

Staying in Africa, we head to an orphanage that cares for chimps, a species that is feeling the effects of a habitat loss and a hunger for bush meat.

Back in Germany, we go underwater to explore the damaging effects of old World War II bombs, and find out how to get hold of a sustainably farmed Christmas tree.
