More than 39 million Kenyans have a smartphone, and social media are an important source for their daily news. But it's also a place where lots of hate speech, fake news and propaganda is spread, which often ignites controversies and ethnic conflicts. A new cyber crime law now also criminalizes spreading of digital hate speech. Critics fear it could also silence critical voices.
