When police came to raid a small gay bar in New York City 50 years ago, something unthinkable happened: The gay community fought back. The raid at the Stonewall Inn on June 28, 1969 sparked a violent rebellion that lasted for several days. The Stonewall riots were a tipping point for gay rights and have been credited with spurring the US gay rights movement.
