Wartime bomb found in Berlin

Delays are expected across Germany's rail network following the discovery of an unexploded World War II bomb near Berlin's main train station. It was found on Tuesday evening during construction work.

Experts were to decide on Wednesday how to dispose of the 100-kilogram bomb (220 pounds), and a police spokesman warned that "passengers should be prepared for delays and detours for long distances." Road traffic could also be affected.

The area where the bomb was found, a track of land north of the Berlin Hauptbahnhof, was sealed off on Tuesday.

WWII bomb found in Berlin

Dozens of World War II bombs are discovered across Germany every year, with thousands still believed to be in the ground. The bombs are removed or detonated in controlled explosions.

In June 2010, three members of a bomb disposal squad were killed and six others injured as they prepared to defuse a bomb left over from World War II.

The bomb was uncovered by a construction crew working on a sports stadium in the central German city of Goettingen.
