世界卫生组织(WHO)证实叙利亚爆发小儿麻痹症。该组织一位发言人表示,迄今为止叙利亚东北部地区已经发现10起病例。他表示担心疫情可能像其他地区蔓延。过去几周内援助组织和叙利亚卫生当局已经开始准备为240万儿童注射疫苗。

一般情况下,新生儿从第二月就应该开始口服儿童麻痹疫苗,并在此后继续服用三次。但世卫组织相信,由于爆发内战,叙利亚儿童未能及时接种。1999年之后,儿童麻痹症在该国本已绝迹。
叙利亚的邻国也对疫情扩散表示担忧。每天有大约4000名叙利亚难民进入约旦、伊拉克、土耳其和黎巴嫩。世卫组织警告称,病毒可能随难民流动而传播,扩散风险极高。目前收容大约100万叙利亚难民的黎巴嫩已经开始为70万名黎巴嫩和外籍儿童进行疫苗接种。
