Christiane Bögemann-Hagedorn studied law and ethnology. Her doctoral thesis examined cultural change within an indigenous group in Mexico based on research she conducted in the field. She currently heads the directorate for civil society, economic policy and the private sector at Germany's Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Since beginning her career with the ministry in 1986, she has mainly focused on cooperation and development policy strategy and development in Africa. Bögemann-Hagedorn was also private secretary to the parliamentary state secretary and head of the divisions for legal affairs, organization and West Africa respectively. She gained further experience of development policy through foreign postings for several years in Mexico and Sudan.
