Tanzania: East African Common Market

The planned East African Common Market is to be realized by January 2010. It envisions a common economic market, a customs and monetary union and a political federation.

In cooperation with the Friedrich-Ebert-Foundation in Tanzania, DW Akademie is dedicating a special three-part project to this historical development in East Africa.

The project involves training journalists from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, as well as from Rwanda and Burundi, which are currently candidate states for the common market, so that they can report objectively and informatively on the relatively abstract details of the planned alliance.

The first part of the project took place in 2007 at the headquarters of the East African Common Market in Arusha, Tanzania. Radio and television journalists were trained together in one group. In the second and third stages of the project in 2008, the journalists will be asked to produce separate reports for their television and radio stations.
