Bayern Munich announced that they had finalized a deal with Mats Hummels on Monday afternoon, signing the central defender to a five-year contract.

The former Borussia Dortmund captain joins the club just two weeks after a transfer agreement was reached between the two Bundesliga sides and just days after the Bavarian giants overcame Dortmund in the German Cup final on penalties.

On Monday the 27-year-old completed his medical and signed a deal that could keep him at Bayern until June 30, 2021. "We are pleased to welcome Mats back to Bayern," said club CEO Harl-Heinz Rummenigge, referencing the fact that the defender left Bavaria in 2008 to join Dortmund.

"Of course the departure from Dortmund is hard for me," said Hummels in a statment on Bayern's website. "Now I'm just happy for everything that awaits me at Bayern. I am very excited."

Hummels joined Bayern as a child at the age of six while his father, Hermann Hummels, worked at the club as a youth coordinator. There, he worked his way through the youth sides before playing for Hermann Gerland and the Bayern amateur side. He played only once for Bayern's senior side, in May 2007, before transferring to Dortmund, first on loan and then permanently.

Hummels joins Mario Götze and Robert Lewandowski in the ranks of key Dortmund players to transfer to Bayern in recent years.
