Schalke moved clear of the Bundesliga relegation zone with a 1-0 victory on Sunday over Mainz who have faltered after a quick start to the 2010 season.

Jefferson Farfan struck in the 30th minute in the game's only goal, moving Felix Magath's struggling side up to tenth in the Bundesliga standings - and Mainz to fourth position.

Mainz was given a chance to pull level when Manuel Neuer brought down Adam Szalai in the penalty area with 20 minutes left to play. Butz Neuer made amends by diving to his right to stop Andre Schuerrle's weak penalty attempt.

Also on Sunday, Freiburg shut out Borussia Moenchengladbach 3-0, knocking defending champions Bayern Munich down to the sixth spot in the table.

Senegal striker Cisse scored twice and joined Frankfurt's Greek star Theofanis Gekas as the league's leading scorer with 13 goals in 16 games.
