Colombia: Deutsche Welle joins international protest against surveillance of journalists by the military

The military in Colombia is facing allegations of surveillance. According to recent media reports, the military is alleged to have illegally monitored and collected personal data from around 130 people including journalists from several countries and other professional and personal groups last year.

The Colombian Foundation for Press Freedom (FLIP) and other organizations such as Reporters without Borders have termed this as a clear violation of press freedom and a threat to the personal safety of those concerned.

Deutsche Welle employees have joined numerous colleagues from around the world who addressed the government and the military in Colombia in an open letter on May 3, the International Press Freedom Day. The letter urges those responsible in the Colombian government and army to clarify the facts of the case immediately and comprehensively and to answer the questions of the signatories in a transparent manner.

Through its participation in the protest action, Deutsche Welle expresses its solidarity and support to all journalists and its partners in Colombia.

Deutsche Welle and its media development organization DW Akademie have long had close ties to Colombia. DW opened an office in the capital Bogotá at the beginning of 2018 from where it reports for the Latin American audience. DW Akademie supports projects in Colombia aimed at strengthening media diversity.

El Ejército colombiano es blanco de las críticas por presuntas acciones ilegales de vigilancia. Según informes de prensa unas 130 personas, entre las que se encuentran periodistas de diferentes países, habrían sido vigiladas ilegalmente el pasado año. El Ejército habría además recopilado sus datos personales.

La Fundación colombiana para la Libertad de Prensa (FLIP) y otras organizaciones como Reporteros sin Fronteras hablan de claras ingerencias en la libertad de prensa y de una amenaza a la seguridad personal de los afectados.

Los empleados de Deutsche Welle se han unido a un gran número de colegas internacionales que se dirigieron el 3 de mayo, Día Internacional de la Libertad de Prensa, con una carta abierta al Gobierno y a los militares en Colombia. En ella exigen a los responsables del Ejecutivo y del Ejército colombianos aclarar completamente y sin demora el caso y responder con transparencia las preguntas de los firmantes. 

Con su participación en la acción de protesta, Deutsche Welle expresa su solidaridad y apoyo hacia todos los periodistas y sus socios en Colombia.
