From a new DW logo to a new bridge in Sokodé – meetings that provide a view for something new

On receiving her price our Togolese "DW and you" winner heard about some very interesting development and cultural projects planned in Togo.

With the relaunch of the expanded contents, the numerous innovations (in 2012) and of course the new DW logo, we called on our users all around the world to send us pictures of themselves with the DW logo. In a picture gallery we presented the huge amount of ingenuity, diversity and internationality of our users and awarded the 23 best and most creative entries.
Of course, we continue to be interested in the stories and personal experiences our users have to tell – even after the closure of our “DW and You” contest. Therefore we are very pleased that one of our winners, Franciska from Togo, shares her story with us.

The German ambassador Joseph Weiß hands the price over to Franciska

Franciska from Togo, winner of our “DW and you” contest, learned about an exciting project in Togo.

On 9 May 2012, Franciska visited the German Embassy in Lomé, Togo to receive her price – a brand new smart phone. It was on this occasion that she heard about some very interesting development and cultural projects planned in Togo. Amongst these projects there was one she liked especially: a bridge construction project in Sokodé. But read for yourself!
“This story takes place in a town located in the heart of Togo, in Sokodé. There is a river dividing this town, making it difficult for the inhabitants to get from one side to the other. Especially during the rainy season this river posed a real threat to children living in Sokodé.
Summarily the people of Sokodé formed a committee and decided to build a bridge across the river. Because of the historical ties the town has with Germany, they simply decided to send a letter to the German Embassy here in Togo asking for assistance with the realization of this project.

And guess what: They simply wrote a letter, sealed it in an envelope on which they only wrote: "Ambassade d'Allemagne" and then brought it to the local post office. And indeed, even without a postal code or any address details, the letter did reach its destination and was personally read by the German ambassador himself who shortly thereafter contacted the committee to have them elaborate a construction plan for the project.

No sooner said than done! The people of the committee developed a concept for their project, which was approved and signed today.

What a wonderful story, don't you agree?”
