Public broadcasting and development: Latin America shows how to do it!

Hosted by Ibero - America General Secretariat
Wednesday, June 24 / Room C

We live in times of increasing concentration of (private) media power and vertical integration of content providers. Far too often, information is taking the back seat if it is not immediately attractive to position publicity.
Can there be a middle way for public broadcasting?

The Ibero-American Satellite TV Channel will start operating end of 2015. An outcome of the XXIV Iberoamerican Summit of Heads of State and Government (Veracruz, Mexico), the 22 countries integrating the Ibero-American Community agreed to launch this channel as the basis for the Digital Cultural Agenda for Latin America.
The TV signal aims to give a voice to the rich diversity of a region such as Latin America, and serve as a communication and education vehicle for the crafting of Latin America’s development policy.

Can governments support an alternative media model? How can the temptation of political interference be avoided? Join the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) to address these pressing questions. Debate and engage around the role of public broadcasting in today’s media environment, and the challenge of editorial independence.
